Chlorine dioxide

Safety of the environment is a key advantage of chlorine dioxide in comparison with other disinfectants.

Unlike chlorine and ozone, which are carcinogenic byproducts, chlorine dioxide’s byproducts are inorganic substances like chlorites which are reduced after and produce hazardless chlorides. Speed of this reaction is a function of various factors, but in salt water, speed of these processes is as low as 5 minutes.

Ozone deforms bromide ions into bromate and also enormous amount of aldehyde, ketone or other byproducts from ozonation of organic material are produced and this is a disadvantage for ozone. Chlorine, also, produces THM and chloroamin.
